L’Etoile offers hiking or cycling, archery, motorised circuits by Quad or 4×4, with a restaurant and reception for visitors. The restaurant built in a forest thatch atmosphere proposes a typical Mauritian cuisine.

Further South, La Vallée de Ferney is an ecotourism site completely dedicated to the natural resources of one of the remaining Mauritian endemic forests. The Ferney Valley forest is known to shelter a variety of endemic and native species of Mauritius among which some are in extreme danger of extinction, like the Mauritius kestrel, one of the world’s rarest birds, and a number of critically endangered trees including two Pandanus species believed extinct until their recent rediscovery. To ensure the protection of this natural heritage, the CIEL Group has decided in 2006 to define a conservation zone of more than 200 hectares in which an ambitious conservation program will be carried out to protect the endemic and native plants, and also facilitate regrowth by gradually eliminating intrusive exotic plants.

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, formerly known as Royal Botanic Gardens, Pamplemousses covers about 37 hectares.

It is found on the site where Mahé de Labourdonnais, the famous French Governor who once lived at Mon Plaisir, created a vegetable garden. He brought in water from the nearby Rivière des Pamplemousses for irrigation by erecting the stone work of “Canal de la Villebague”. Afterwards, the Garden was run to cultivate medicinal and other useful plant species for the “Compagnie des Indes”.

In 1767, Intendant Pierre Poivre took charge of the Garden. He introduced spices viz nutmeg, clove as well as many ornamental trees. His objective was to create an acclimatisation garden of incomparable richness and beauty which took shape within a few years. He left in 1772 and passed the task to Nicolas Céré, his neighbour and collaborator from Belle Eau Estate. The latter created windbreaks to protect the trees as well as a fish pond where the Giant Amazon Waterlily (Victoria amazonica) is now grown and admired by nearly all visitors to the Garden.

After a long unstable and difficult period (1810 to 1849), the Garden was restored by James Duncan through the introduction of numerous palms, conifers, bougainvilleas and attractive plants among which are Petrea, Gardenia, Azalea and Camelia.

As from 1913, the administration of the Garden was entrusted to the newly created Department of Agriculture. Various plants have been introduced, so much so that now there are some 800 species of plants of which 80 are palms. There are over 8000 magnificent specimens of plants in the Garden and they are well worth a visit.

In 1987, the Garden became known as the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, after the beloved first Prime Minister and later Govenor General of Mauritius. He was very fond of this Garden which is found in the constituency where he was on several occasions elected as a Member of the National Assembly, then known as Legislative Council. His funerary monument (Samadhi) is found near the Chateau de Mon Plaisir and a Commemorative Monument consisting of a fresh water pond crowned by a lotus flower with the inscription: “In Beloved Memory of the Father of the Nation” – Source: www.gov.mu

The garden can be visited within one of our excursions “Port Louis and The Botanical Garden of Pamplemousses”

Specialist of ecotourism, Le Club des Grands Bois has an exceptional hunting territory, in one of the last preserved natural zones of Mauritius. In Nouvelle France, in the centre of the island, Le Domaine du Chasseur covers more than 1000 hectares. On this wild ground, the adventurers come to experience the strong feelings provided by the extreme sports: mountain bikes, the audacious off the beaten track or quad bikes, alone or in group, for a memorable team building.
After so much effort, comes the moment to enjoy, next to a cracking chimney fire, the best traditional Mauritian cuisine.

Exciting trekking amidst the nature, discovery of many endemic species of the island, dive in the pure water of a secret river, raids on quad bikes or mountain bikes, going through the frightening tests of the off the beaten track, constitute only one weak range of the possibilities offered by the Domaine du Chasseur.

For each group, a particular program can be conceived and carried out, according to the characteristics of the team and the goals to be achieved.

Several hundreds of wild deer and boars roam on the Domaine. Imported from Java by the Dutchmen during the XVIIth century, they thrived on the island. Those of the Domaine count among the most beautiful ones.
Whether by stalking or small mobile groups, posted on the watch posts, hunting is the great speciality of the Domaine. Experienced guides can decode the most insignificant spoors left by the game. Rifles and ammunitions are provided by the Domaine. The trophies can also be dispatched towards the majority of the countries.

A few kilometers away from the Domaine, the extraordinary lagoon of Mahebourg offers an open access to all the marine pleasures. Big game fishing, try to bring back the mythical Black Marlin, apnea diving in turquoises water … But the Domaine is able also to propose an exclusive event: a regatta on authentic traditional fishing boats, ending on an absolutely deserted small island, Ilot Flamants.

Naturally Authentic
Situated on the South of the central plateau the New Domaine du Chasseur keep all the characteristics that made its success during the past two decades.

On an exceptional natural environment of over one thousand hectares, live in freedom thousand of deers and wild boars. The standard of the trophies is exceptional. During the last three years, trophies were awarded to the Domaine du Chasseur.

This population will surely excite hunters around the whole world. Those deeply in love with nature will enjoy the VTT & trekking path while admiring the fauna & flora, with a panoramic view on the lion mountain and on the bay of Mahebourg. A beautiful hunting lodge warm and comfortable welcomes the visitors in front of a typical chimney. They will have the possibility to taste the best traditional recipe of palm heart, deer, wild boar & fish, all cook on wood fire, not to forget also the Rhum Zartistes.

Ninety per cent of the territory is reserved for ecotourism and the other part is devoted to other activities like Mountain Bikes, Trekking, Quads, etc.

This outstanding reserve is situated at 10 minutes from Curepipe, 15 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from all hotels of the South coast.

We also organise regularly regattas with traditional pirogues and fishing in the Old Grand Port Bay; including visit to the islands of the region.

The new Domaine du Chasseur is a must for those who want to discover the traditional Mauritian arts of living either on land or at sea.

Hunting
The hunting reserves are situated in the South and on the central plateau of Mauritius Island where the game and the wild life are the most present.More than 1000 deer and wild boars roam freely on the 1000 hectares of the forest.
The Mauritian deer (Cervus Timorensis Russa) were introduced on the island in 1639 by the Dutch.

As for the wild boars, historians are not that sure, but they think that it was the Portuguese who at the beginning of the 16th century introduced the wild pigs.

Stalk hunting is one of the hunting methods the more commonly used, but we can also organise hunting in small mobile groups, posted on the “miradors” (Watch Posts).

The Domaine will supply you with the ammunition and the rifles (Tikka, Manlicher & Savage); all equipped with “Schmidt & Bender” telescopic sights. The hunters will be taken in charge by the experimented guides who will provide the necessary security elements and the smooth running of the hunt.

It is highly recommended to be equipped with good walking shoes and wear dark clothes (avoid wearing colorful clothes, specially white ones).

The animal killed remains the property of the Domaine, with the exception of the trophies, which will be the property of the hunters. We also propose taxidermy, freight and other services (phytosanitary permits etc…).

After the hunt, in respect of the hunters’ tradition, our cook will prepare the offals of the deer and then the party can carry on….

Hunting, when done in a professional way, is the most beautiful sport; in fact it is the oldest sport ever. The Domaine du Chasseur counts 20 years of experience in the hunting world of Mauritius.

Restaurant “La Belle Kréole”
This restaurant, situated in Mahebourg on the road to Pointe d’Esny, is totally dedicated to authentic, traditional Creole cuisine. The setting: a garden which runs along the seaside and the decor recalls the small objects of daily life from past generations.

La Belle Kréole has been created by Alain O’Reilly, famous personality who pioneered eco-tourism with the renowned Domaine du Chasseur. This restaurant pays tribute to the magnificent culinary traditions of the days of slavery. Whilst the word “Creole”, initially to refer to all those born on islands, in Mauritius, its meaning has evolved to refer only to those who are of African origin.

Stew and rougails, corn from Rodrigues and coconut from Agalega thus form part of the basic ingredients of the dishes proposed in this unique restaurant.

La Belle Kreole is not simply a restaurant, but a sort of museum of the Mauritian gastronomy.

Restaurant “Les Copains d’Abord”
Les Copains d’Abord is situated at the Mahebourg waterfront, facing the blue lagoon where the famous naval battle of “Vieux Grand Port” was fought in the 19th century. It has rapidly asserted itself as the best restaurant in the South of the island where you come to taste what the ocean can offer as its best catch. It has special warmth with great musical entertainment in.

Alain O’Reilly, owner of Les Copains d’Abord, is a legendary figure in the world of tourism and created the famous Domaine du Chasseur over twenty years ago. Today, he is at the head of a clan, christened “Le Club des Grands Bois”.

The menu of Les Copains d’Abord offers venison and boar meat from the Domaine du Chasseur and the poultry bred at the Domaine’s farm. Palm trees and vegetables are also grown at the Domaine.
Fish and seafood come from the daily catch of a small group of fishermen from Mahebourg. Alain O’Reilly, the owner, has provided them with the equipment (pirogue, engine, fishing and security equipment).

On top of these delicacies, the menu at Les Copains d’Abord has some exceptional specialities from the most ancient Mauritian cooking traditions which Alain O’Reilly has recreated. Thus, we can enjoy deer’s tongue or brains, palm heart gratin with crab meat from mangroves or Konokono and a very refreshing pineapple mousse. On a more classic note, we can also savour the best curries, served with a lovely variety of chutneys (Mauritian chatinis).

It would be a missed opportunity to pass by the South without stopping by Les Copains d’Abord……

Adrenalin Moreover
If Mauritius is unanimously appreciated for the beauty of its landscapes, the richness of its nature, the kindness of its population and the comfort of its hotels, it can also cater for the sportsmen and the adventurers. To add adrenalin to your stay, X-Trême Adventure proposes a broad range of dynamic and sporting activities…

Under the rays of a burning sun, the lagoon of Mahebourg lets burst all the nuances of blue and greens. Cutting out on the horizon, the silhouettes of the small islands which command the main entrance to the lagoon are detached, surmounted by the tower of the old lighthouse. Pushed by the regular trade winds, six traditional pirogues with the coloured sails surf on the waves. Carried by the wind and the spray, the orders of the “skippers” snap. The team members, place themselves on the outside edge of the pirogues to counterbalance the push of the wind and to avoid upsetting.

In front, Confidence loses ground and its crew looks at, with anguish, the stem of Notre – Dame – De – Lourdes to approach. Its bowsprit is a few meters behind… Further back, the pack of the last four followers remains grouped. Gaetan, the owner of Friendship, veers brutally and leaves the group while sailing towards the coast: He counts on the draughts generated by the slopes of the Lion Mountain to gain speed and to catch up with the two escaped ones.

Confidence and Notre Dame De Lourdes are now free in and out. Part of the team-members of the two boats bails out to reduce the dugouts and to gain a little dash. The skipper of Confidence curves its trajectory suddenly, thus losing a few meters. His stake is daring: he intends to be placed exactly in the wake of Notre Dame De Lourdes, in order to mask its wind. Indeed, the blue sail of Notre-Dame starts to ease and the pirogue wavers dangerously. Confidence, on the contrary, makes a brutal jump…Too much: the bamboo mast emits a sinister cracking and breaks! Under the gibes of the other crews, Confidence sees to move away Notre Dame De Lourdes and to pass the three followers. Friendship slips behind the winner and finishes the regatta in the second place.

The pirogues gather and sail now, more calmly, towards Ilot Flamants; where succulent grilled fish awaits the one day sailors… The team-members of this animated regatta do not have anything in common with old sea wolves. From all Europe, they are holiday makers who, thanks to X-Trême Adventure, could live this exciting experience.
Adventure proposes a broad range of dynamic and sporting activities…

Gymtonic…
A modern and friendly fitness centre
Just on top of La Belle Kréole, the famous restaurant at Pointe d’Esny, next to Mahebourg, the Gym Tonic fitness centre welcomes all the courageous of the area.

Whether through a yearly subscription for the residents of Mahebourg and its vicinity, or a monthly package for the long term users or even by the hour for the short term visitors, Gym Tonic proposes some flexible and easy to use formulaes, giving the chance to each and everyone to take advantage of its exceptional set up.

All the equipment, specially imported from South Africa, benefit from the latest technology and are of professional standard.

Kelly Wong, the friendly and experienced gym instructor, will help individually each user to establish a training program adopted to the goals to be achieved. Through each session, his personal supervision and his expert advice will help each and everyone to optimise the time pass on each equipment.

The atmosphere at Gym Tonic is very relax and without any competition spirit, as we come there first for our own well being!

The rum which has talent
In all the Mascareignes islands (Mauritius, Rodrigues, Reunion), there is a tradition which consists in letting macerate a long time, fruits, lianas or roots in rum. It is what one calls “Island Recipe Rum”.

If, during a long time, the first motivation related to this practice came from the mediocrity of the rums produced locally, it is, today, hoisted to the rank of tradition. Each family, or almost, has her own recipe, jealously kept.

Irishman descendant, coming to Mauritius in the luggage of the British administrators, the restaurant owner Alain O’ Reilly, inherited him also, of the family know-how.

In its agricultural rum, distilled according to the old way and in small quantities, he drowns wild plums and vanilla, or litchis. But the secret, more than the choice of the fruits, lies in the method of ageing. Having repurchased, some years ago, a stock of old barrels used for the importation of Irish whiskies (inevitably), he lets this beverage rest during long years in these worthy barrels of oak…

In the restaurants, La Belle Kréole, Les Copains d’Abord and Le Domaine du Chasseur, he pleasantly makes one taste this nectar with the wooded after-tastes. On sale, Rhum Zartistes is proposed in three vintages, of five, ten and seventeen years of age!!!

As for the name of this so particular rum, it comes from the favour which it enjoys near the musicians and singers who regularly came to produce themselves in the establishments of Alain O’ Reilly and who, according to the latter, “draws from it a new inspiration”…

Chez Tonton
A lodging of charm in the middle of Mahebourg

Within two steps of the restaurant Les Copains d’Abord and the sea front of Mahebourg, Le Club des Grands Bois proposes two extremely pleasant apartments.
Lying out, each one with a large bed room, one living room and a pleasant terrace, they are comfortable and are entirely equipped (television, kitchen….).

The furniture, simple and elegant, comes from Bali.
Available for one night, as well as for long stays, they are proposed at exceptional prices.

The proximity of Les Copains d’Abord, one of the very best tables of the island, makes it possible to propose various “packages”:
Bed and Breakfast
Half board
Full board
Room Service

The residents can also take advantage, with preferential rate, of all the possibilities offered by Le Club des Grands Bois:
Meals at Les Copains d’Abord or at La Belle Kréole restaurants
Excursion at Le Domaine du Chasseur, in Nouvelle France
Excursion at sea, in traditional fishing boat or pleasure boat
Access to the fitness centre Gym Tonic, etc.

Without missing, Mahebourg offers
Monday morning, the open flea market
The visit of the Naval Museum, where many historical treasures are exposed…

Nestled between the turquoise blue of Le Vieux Grand Port and the emerald green of a unique primary forest, Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchée is a heaven of peace and a calm retreat, away from stressful cities and noisy places.

Part of the valley of Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchée used to be known as Le Domaine du Chasseur.

With the acquisition of Le Domaine d’Ylang-Ylang and surrounding land, Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchée has considerably grown in size and is run since February 2007 under a new management with a new work force.

Trekking
Our guests can discover the Mauritian fauna and flora on our 4 trails with different levels of difficulty designed to please occasional hikers or trained ironmen.

Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchée stretches over hundreds of hectares and offer several trekking possibilities. Guest will be able to discover Mauritian fauna and flora in a preserved natural environment along carefully laid out trails. Circuits go from one to two hours walks. Panoramic views and lush vegetation mix with wild boars, deers and our preserved resident, the Mauritian Kestrel in order to vivify the ramblers’ souls and hearts.

Proposed Rambles
• Green ramble: less than one hour track –2 Km walk
• Yellow ramble: one hour track – 3 Km walk
• Blue ramble: one and a half hour track – 4 Km walk
• Red ramble: two hours track – 6 Km walk

We advice you to wear good walking shoes, a pull-over during the winter season, and protect yourselves with mosquito repellent and sun cream.

Hunting
Hunt by stalk is possible throughout the whole year. Hunters have the opportunity to track down and shoot Java deers or wild boars using rifle or bow.

Hunting at Le domaine d’Anse Jonchée
Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchée is one of the most popular hunting grounds of Mauritius. Hunting is possible during the whole year. We are proposing you hunting grounds of more than 300 hectares, through primary forest and luxuriant vegetation. The best season for hunting is from May to December, but we recommend hunting from July to September. Hunting is by stalk or in wait on a belvedere. The hunter can shoot using rifle or bow. Our private hunting reserve counts 600 Java deers.

Our Trophies
Java deer is a typical animal of the primary forest. It has wood that rounds up on its neck and can grow long enough to be as long as its back. Three points on each antler start crowning its head when the deer is two years old. Its wood grows every year after each metamorphosis which begins by mid-December. Each hunter will have the opportunity to see and track down several big trophies in our primary forest and our mountains, such as the Gold Medal stag, the Silver Medal stag etc.

What you need to know about hunting at Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchée
• One hunt per day
• Each hunting party are accompanied by one of our guide
• We supply gun and scroll. Hunters by bow must bring their own gear.
• Each hunter is “owner of his final decision”. If any kind of deer, even one unexpected, is wounded the hunter has to pay for the total cost.
• If the hunter doesn’t kill anything, a minimum charge will be payable
• The non hunter can follow the hunt but a fee will be payable
• The meat is the property of “Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchee”
• If the hunter damages a rifle or a scope he will have to pay for the damaged items.
• Each hunter will have to procure his hunting permit and a copy of his passport

If challenge is not a hurdle, if you enjoy the thrill of a real hunt by stalk and walk using rifle or bow, if the unique trophies fascinate you, you found the right place.

Our wildlife
Since June 2007, we are the proud official partner of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation on their project to preserve the kestrel (endemic falcon).

Accommodation
Le Domaine d’Anse Jonchée offers accommodation in 7 “Ti-Vilaz” lodges surrounded by luxurious vegetation, a natural habitat of endangered species.

Restaurant
Our restaurant, “Le Panoramour” entices our guests into an authentic combination of typical Mauritian cuisine (venison specialties) and panoramic views.

This geological formation called the “Seven Coloured Earth” is comprised of dunes comprised of seven different coloured layers.

Over the millennia, the rocks were pulverized into sands which have the amazing property of settling into distinct layers: if you take a handful of each of the seven different colours of dirt and mix them together, they’d eventually separate into a colourful spectrum, each dot of sand rejoining its colour caste.

Since the earth was first exposed, rains had carved beautiful patterns into the hillside, creating an effect of earthen meringue. At first you’ll notice shadows on the hills, creating the illusion of different colours, but soon you realise that the colours are real and the shadows were the illusion….

Nearby you will also find a great vantage point to view the spectacular waterfall which plunges more than 100 meters.

Mauritius was formed by volcanic molten rock, and the coloured earth is the result of the cooling of the molten.
The coloured earths are a fine site and the seven different colours could be distinguished easily. The scenery around there is also wonderful, and it’s definitely a place you need to take a camera with you.

Close to Black River Gorges National Park, from the village of Case Noyale, a winding road leads to the coloured earths at Chamarel. Over time the weathering and subsequent erosion of volcanic ash has led to the formation of exposed hills complete with contrasting tiers of different shades of red, yellow, green and blue. From the hillside an easy walking trail leads to the beautiful Chamarel waterfalls, cascading hundreds of feet down the side of a cliff.

The village of Chamarel, in the south west of the island, is home to two natural wonders – the magnificent Chamarel Falls and the coloured earths of Chamarel. The earths are particularly unusual; created by volcanic rocks that cooled at different temperatures, the earths form beautiful patterns of colour in the exposed hillsides. And if you mix the coloured earth together, they’ll eventually settle into separate layers.

On the premises, you will also find a children’s playground and some giant tortoises.

The restaurant, Le Chamarel, nearby the coloured earth site is slightly expensive but the quality of food is worth it; and there is also a gift shop.

It’s an opportunity to see some natural splendours of Mauritius as you will take in the coloured earths, the waterfall but also take the opportunity to see the Black River national park.
